Prevention Memoriam Through the years the Scottsboro Fire Department has lost two fire fighters to death in the line of duty. On Friday September 1, 1967, Scottsboro Fire Chief E.V. “Shorty” Bishop age 62, and Captain Floyd “Shank” Dawson age 46 was killed responding to a fire in Hollywood when their fire department pickup collided with a car. The accident occurred on Highway 72 about 75 feet outside the city limits in front of the Chicken Basket. Captain Dawson who was driving the fire department vehicle was pronounced dead at Jackson County Hospital, Chief Bishop died while en route to a Birmingham hospital, and was pronounced dead at the Marshall County Hospital in Guntersville. Chief Bishop was a charter member of the Scottsboro Volunteer Fire Department when it was organized in 1937 and was named full-time chief in 1944. |
