The Scottsboro Street Department is the largest department in Scottsboro Municipal Services. We employ 45 full-time personnel and 10 - 12 part-time seasonal personnel. Our department is divided into four divisions. We are responsible for the maintenance of city streets & right of ways, surface water drainage, all bridges and culverts within Scottsboro city limits. There are 225 miles of streets within the city limits and of which 160 miles being maintained by the Street Department. Approximately 40 miles of curb & gutter are maintained by the Street Department. As well as maintenance responsibilities of streets & right of ways the Street Department also upon request assist the Airport Authority, Cemetery Department, Recreation Department, City School System or any other city owned properties in repairs to facilities, excavating, drainage, landscaping and mowing. Our Street Department responds to all types of emergency situations - ice & snow removal, storm damage debris removal, chemical spills, etc. Upon request during emergencies we work directly with the Police Department, Sheriff's Department, Fire Department, Electric Power Board, Emergency Management Agency, Jackson County Public Works and State Department of Transportation.
STREET DEPARTMENT DIVISIONS
- Heavy Equip. Division: Responsibilities include street construction, resurfacing and repair of streets, drainage, tile placement, care & maintenance of all city property, curb & gutter and sidewalk repair & replacement. This division has the expertise and knowledge to maintain & utilize the large fleet of heavy equipment that includes dozers, track-hoes, excavators, compactors, motor graders & brooms. This equipment is used daily in construction, care and maintenance of the city streets, right of ways and city property. Also, it is their responsibility to care & maintain all traffic & street signs and the tree & limb trimming on the right of ways as well as cleaning & up-keep of Courthouse Square and adjacent city parking lots & properties.
- Mowing: This division is responsible for mowing all city street right of ways and city properties. Also, mowing, tree trimming & debris removal on State Department of Transportation Right of Ways (Hwy 72 from Hollywood city limits to city limits at North Sauty Creek). All city parks & recreational areas. Care and maintain shrubbery at Hwy 35 & Hwy 72 Interchange.
- Herbicide/Pesticide/Veg/Debris Removal: This division is responsible for the vegetation control for over 160 miles of city streets and right of ways. This is controlled basically by administering an application of specified chemicals along the street right of ways four to five times annually for weed control. This division is also responsible for paint striping of all city streets, parking lots and city properties. The mosquito control/pesticide program is also the responsibility of this division. To administer necessary chemicals annually in effort to control excessive mosquito growth in the hatching stage and also a chemical fogging or spray operation - mosquitoes are much more difficult to control once they are in flight. Knuckle boom trucks & loaders to remove house-hold debris, tree limbs or accumulations of junk, excluding household garbage. This division is also responsible for all curb side debris and leaf removal that consists of multiple large trucks and knuckle-boom loaders to assist vacuum leaf machines.
- Vehicle Maintenance: Service and maintenance of 216 city vehicles and equipment is the sole responsibility of the city maintenance shop. This includes fire trucks, police cruisers, all the heavy equipment, Sanitation Dept. trucks, Street Department trucks and all other cars and trucks associated with the successful operation of the city. A preventative maintenance program allows the maintenance shop to service & monitor all vehicles on a regular schedule. This computerized system is a very valuable asset not only to this department but also all other departments in the maintenance of city equipment. In addition the maintenance shop is responsible for the operation of a cooperative card-lock & key fuel system that serves all city departments and various other government agencies.
This is multi-faceted department that has a key role in the appearance and transportation for the City of Scottsboro. The members of the City of Scottsboro Street Department are very proud of the many positive achievements accomplished year after year by our department for the betterment of our citizens and surrounding communities. Moving Scottsboro forward is our goal. We take great pride in the up-keep & appearance of our city right of ways - please call before digging or disturbing any portion.
