Cedar Hill Cemetery | History | Scott Cemetery

Cedar Hill Cemetery

Cedar Hill Cemetery is the only City owned Cemetery in Scottsboro, Alabama.  Currently the cemetery has approximately 20 acres of the 63 acres of land available for sale for burial plots.  We offer grave plots for $200.00 each or a four grave plot for $700.00.

The oldest part of the cemetery is located at the entrance on Cedar Hill Drive.  There are graves dating back to the 1870’s.  We have Civil War soldiers buried here as well as WW II, Korea and Vietnam soldiers.  There is a lot of history represented in the Cedar Hill Cemetery from members of the first families of Scottsboro buried here to the people who were responsible for the building of Scottsboro buried here also.

Some of these graves were relocated to Cedar Hill from other cemeteries such as the Frazier, Proctor and Sterne Cemeteries.

During Mayor Walt Hammer’s Administration, (1988-1992) the hedge separating the black portion of the cemetery from the white portion was removed ending the segregation in Cedar Hill. We have several streets throughout the cemetery lined with Dogwood trees and are in the process of planting Dogwood trees along every street within the cemetery.  We have four full time employees who are responsible for the care and maintenance of the cemetery.  They also work with the funeral homes and vault companies to serve the families of the people who are buried at our cemetery.

The City of Scottsboro has recently taken the responsibility of the care and maintenance of Scott Cemetery located on the ridge overlooking Hwy 35 and Hwy 72.  This was a privately owned cemetery where the founder of Scottsboro, Mr. Robert Scott, is buried.

We are constantly looking for techniques and projects to improve the cemetery which will take us through the 21st Century.

We invite you to visit our Cemetery and we will be glad to answer any questions or concerns you may have.
