Aviation History at Fly-IN
It's impressive.
In the air or on the ground the completely restored American Airlines DC-3 airplane is something to behold. The propeller-driven passenger airliner that helped revolutionize air transportation during the 1930's into the 40's and beyond is a piece of aviation history. The airplane, designated "Flagship Detroit," will be the featured attraction at the annual Fly-In at Scottsboro Municipal-Word Field Airport today and tomorrow. Yak-52's, Chinese made Nanchang CJ models, experimental planes, ultralight aircraft and even bi-planes are scheduled to be at the free two-day event. Flights are available on the DC-3, which served as the mainstay of U.S. passenger air travel just prior to WWII and long afterwards, for $150 per person. Reservations for a flight can be made by calling the airport or at the show both Friday and Saturday. Tours of the aircraft can be taken for a nominal fee. The first DC-3 flew on Dec. 17, 1935, the 32nd anniversary of the Wright Brothers original flight at Kitty Hawk, N.C. The one visiting Scottsboro is the 84th DC-3 built and put in service. The aircraft, with few modifications, served as troop transport and cargo planes during WWII. |
